Mangalore, 12 Mar 2013: Congress secured majority in all the municipal bodies except Sullia town council, which is a major success for Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC). It’s attributed to the collective efforts of grass-root-level party workers including office bearers and veteran Congressmen. DCC will adhere to its civic-poll-manifesto in realizing the same during the term. Congress is also leading in civic polls across the state. DCC was hopeful of winning 35 seats in the civic polls of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) that has come true, said Janardhan Poojary, veteran Congress leader and civic poll overseer for Dakshina Kannada (DK) district.
Addressing the media persons during the press meet held at Congress publicity office here at 4.00pm on Monday March 11, Janardhan Poojary said that Congress led MCC will not hike property tax and water tax for the five-year term, besides make provisions for the poor and middle income groups to allow them, in order to build houses in plots of less than 10 cents without the sanction from Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) whereby MCC will be empowered to approve such cases. He stressed to promote communal harmony among people of different faith, caste and creed, which was threatened owing to overtures by Saffron – communal units, who are behind women atrocities and moral policing, stressed Janardhan Poojary.
‘We would like to make coastal district model in the country, where communal harmony thrives and peace reigns. The women will have due respect and freedom, the poor and marginalized in the society are better off,’ said Janardhan Poojary.
When media persons queried what methodology will Congress led civic administration will take on repayment of ADB loans that is already due, Janardhan Poojary said that the improved ratios of tax collections will put the administration in better position to repay the loans. He also said that ward Committees in the jurisdictions of MCC will be formed to address the issues of people residing in respective wards, which were not done so far, emphasized Janardhan Poojary.
DCC Ramanat Rai in his introductory address thanked the voters for franchising their precious votes in favour of Congress; a fitting lesson to BJP ruled municipal body that was involved in corruption, favoritism and misrule. He assured the voters that Congress will maintain transparency in governance and try to restore peace and harmony among the people of different faith, caste and creed.
Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee (DCC) vice president J R Lobo, spokesperson Harikrishna Bantwal, AICC member P V Mohan, MLA U T Khader, youth Congress president Mithun Rai, veteran Congressmen, elected candidates and party activists were present at the occasion.
