M’belle: Moodubelle and Udupi Parishes lift Volleyball and Throwball ‘Young Buds Trophy-2013’

Moodubelle, 21 Jan 2013: Volleyball team of Moodubelle parish and Throwball team from Mother of Sorrows parish, Udupi lifted the maiden ‘Young Buds Trophy-2013’ along with Rs. 10,001/- and Rs.7007/- cash prizes, while  Nakre and Kuntalnagar parishes were runners up and claimed Rs.5005/- and Rs.4004/- respectively as prize money in a thrilling Volleyball and Throwball tournament held in the St. Lawrence College, ground on Sunday. January 20, 2013.

Following the inauguration of the tournament at 11.30 am, knock out matches were played among 11 Volleyball teams representing  parishes as far away as Padukone, Gangolli, Basrur, Hirgan, Nakre and  from the neighbouring parishes including Shankerpura, Kanajar, Pernal, Udyavara and host parishes, Moodubelle and Kuntalnagar. Semi-final matches were played between Nakre and Basrur, and Kanajar and Moodubelle. Finals were between Moodubelle and Nakre in which Moodubelle team emerged victorious whereas team from Nakre was declared as runners up. Lloyd D’Souza from Moodubelle was declared as the best lifter, Lloyd Sequeira and Jesson Martis  , also from Moodubelle were adjudged as best attackers. Arun of Nakre was declared as best allrounder. Individual prizes comprised of trophies and cash award of Rs.1000/- each.

Throwball teams from 8 parishes vied with each other for the top honours.  They represented the following parishes: Nakre, Manipal, Gangolli, Kuntalnagar, Kanajar, Udyavara, Udupi and Moodubelle. The semi-final matches were played between Moodubelle and Kuntalnagar as well as Udupi and Nakre. Eventually Kuntalnagar and Udupi played in the final match following which Udupi emerged as victorious and Kuntalnagar got the second position. Gracy Sequeira of Udupi was declared as best server and Lavita Mendonca of Kuntalnagar as best all-rounder. Besides trophy they received the cash award of Rs. 700/- each.

 

Following the end of the tournament, valedictory and prize distribution function was held at 10.15 pm. Bishop of Udupi Diocese Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo presided over the function. Other dignitaries on the dais included Rev. Fr. Jerome Montteiro, parish priest of Kuntalnagar, Rev. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, parish priest of Moodubelle, Rev. Fr. Alban D’Souza, Director, ICYM, Udupi Varado, Fr. Henry Mascarenha, Secretary to the Bishop, Rajendra Shetty, president of Belle Grama Panchayat, Michael Rodrigues Sastan, Ex-president ,ICYM Udupi Varado, Steven Colaco, president, ICYM Udupi Varado, Valerian mathias, Vice Presdient, Parish Pastoral Council, Kuntalnagar, Theodore Mendonca, secretary, Parish Council, Kuntalnagar and Maxim D’Sa, animator, ICYM, Udupi Varado.
Trophies and cash awards to the winners were distributed by the Bishop while Rajendra Shetty honoured the refrees.

In his message, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Isaac Lobo complimented the ICYM for conducting the tournament in Volleyball and Throwball and said that the youth play an important role in building the diocese. He said that he makes it a point to attend any programme that is being organized by the youth anywhere in the diocese.

Vinyl D’Souza, ICYM President of Kuntalnagar Unit welcomed the guests, Steven Colaco proposed the vote of thanks and Roshan Sequeira of Kuntalnagar compeered the programme.

The entire tournament was organized by the ICYM Units of Moodubelle and Kuntalnagar under the leadership of Ivan Mendonca, Sports Secretary of ICYM Udupi Varado.
