Mangalore: International, domestic cargo terminals at Bajpe functional by August
Mangalore, 17 Jul 2012: The International tag for the Bajpe airport here may take a while, but the International and Domestic Cargo terminals are likely to be commissioned by August this year.
According to a communique from union corporate affairs minister M Veerappa Moily, union minister of civil aviation Ajit Singh has indicated that both the cargo terminals will be functional by August.
This was one of the major demands during the Exporters’ Convention organized by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) on February 13 this year - with the theme ’Karnataka: Export Vision 2020.’
During the convention, M Rafeeque Ahmed, president of FIEO had urged the need for setting up an air cargo complex in Mangalore with cold storage facility to help boost the export of agro products from the State.
Moily said that he took up the matter with civil aviation minister, who in turn said that the Airports Authority of India was building a cargo terminal by modifying the old passenger terminal for handling both international and domestic cargo. Singh said the cold storage facilities will be provided with assistance of Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The same unit will be used for storage and processing of perishable cargo.
