Udupi, 01 Dec: On a bright and serene morning, shortly after the 8:00 AM Holy Mass, approximately 175 senior parishioners of Mount Rosary Church, Santhekatte, gathered in the courtyard of the adjacent High School to discuss the establishment of a Senior Citizens Club. The initiative aimed to create a platform for mutual benefit and community engagement among the elderly.

Introduction and Guidance

The gathering commenced with a warm welcome extended by the parish priest, Rev. Dr. Roque D’Souza, who emphasized the importance of such an initiative in our church and provided an insightful introduction, highlighting the relevance of this platform for the parish community.

Mr. Vijay Sequeira, Convenor of the Commission for Families, gave a brief introduction of the well known resource person, Mr. Leslie Aroza, who elaborated on the utility and significance of senior citizen groups, drawing examples from similar initiatives across the Diocese of Udupi. He underlined the opportunities such clubs present for fostering fellowship, sharing resources, and addressing challenges collectively.

Formation of a Steering Committee

In a progressive step forward, a steering committee comprising 10 members—five men and five women—were voluntarily formed. This committee, will serve along with the Vicar and the Family Aayog, and will lead the club in its initial days and ensure smooth operations.

Coordinated Efforts

Mrs. Daisy Mendonca, Coordinator of the 20 Aayogs, skilfully moderated the proceedings. She ensured a seamless flow of events and facilitated active participation from the attendees. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Luke D’Souza, Vice President, and Parish Pastoral Council, expressing gratitude to all contributors and participants for their enthusiastic involvement.

The initiative marks a promising beginning for a vibrant and supportive community space for the elderly at Mount Rosary Parish, setting an example of inclusivity and care within the parish family.
