Mangaluru: Panama Group set to buy farm produce from distressed peasants over meagre prices

Mangaluru, 05 Jun 2021: At the backdrop of second wave of Corona-19, Congress leader Ivan D’Souza-led group distributed 14,000 food packets to migrant laborers who are stranded in city without work, beggars living off streets and orphaned. They also distributed ration kits to 4,350 poor families and daily wagers. Meanwhile, Panama Group earmarked Rs 50 lac to provide ration kits to 5,000 distressed families in Dakshina Kannada district, said Panama Group chairman Vivek Raj Poojary.
Addressing the media persons, here on Saturday, June 5, Vivek Raj further said, ‘In order to help the distressed farmers who are dumping their crops into the street because of meagre rates; we would procure their produce through our manpower and transport. We would buy vegetables and fruits from across Karnataka by ferrying in 13 freezer trucks. About Rs 75 crore are reserved for these purchases, added Vivek Raj.
