World Environment Day Celebrated in Manipal University

Manipal, 04 June 2011: Environmentally conscious Manipal University celebrated the World Environment day 2011 on Saturday by creating awareness among the younger lot. One hundred and fifty saplings were planted and senior officials of the university exhorted some 900 students on how they could take the green agenda forward.

 

The students of six schools belonging to the Academy of General Education (AGE) and Dr. T.M.A. Pai Foundation, 10 institutions of the University and Asare, participated in a march from the Manipal Education Building to Madhav Vihar, where the saplings were planted. Veteran journalist and honorary director of Manipal Institute of Communication, Dr. M.V. Kamath flagged off the march.

 

 

 

 

The saplings planted today were of medicinal variety. Another 600 saplings are to be donated by the forest department, which will be planted on the campus. Annually, about 500 saplings are planted in the university, which is committed to keeping the campus clean and green.

 

Later, at a brief function at the amphi-theater in Madhav Vihar, a class eight student of Madhava Kripa School, Anshumanth, spoke about environmental awareness. This is the first time a student is speaking at the function held annually. The Registrar, Dr G.K. Prabhu said that every year a student from one of the schools of AGE and Foundation would speak at the function. Pro. Chancellor, Dr. H.S. Ballal, Vice Chancellor, Dr K Ramnarayan and Dr M.V.Kamath spoke on the occasion.
