Child Labour in Udupi
Bellevision Media Network
Udupi, 04 May 2011: Udupi is popular as one of the intelligent District, but in the hot sun it is the children who collect the parking fee here. It can be seen that the young boys are employed by the contractors who are running the parking which is taken on contract from the Municipality, thus violating the child labour protection law.
At parking places such as Rathabidi, Kavi Muddanna Marga, Mosque Road, Kanakadasa Road areas these children can be seen working in the summer heat for a petty perks paid by the contractors. Seeing these children holding a book which is bigger than their palm, wistle in the mouth, face full of sweat one feels really sorry for them.
These are the children of the labourers from north Karnataka such as Bagalkot, Bijapur districts and once the elders go to work; these children go out for either begging or for doing these kind of work to earn some money. It is very hard to control them say some of the locals.
It is a known fact that so many child labourers are working in the Udupi hotels. But the owners who employ them do not think on the child labour, which is very unfortunate.
The parking fees are collected at rupees 5 for cars and rupees 2 for two wheelers per hour by the private contractors. There have been some complaints by public that in some places the used receipts are again reissued.

I suggest a practical solution: try religious conversion. The children will be picked up, sent to remand homes, and state machinery will toe whatever line its current masters want. |
