Qatar to Celebrate ‘Wilfy Rebimbus Day’ on April 1

Doha-Qatar, 21 Mar 2011: A free programme to commemorate Konkani Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus birthday will be organized for all the Konkani and Wilfy fans at the Indian Cultural Centre, Ashoka Hall on Friday April at 6:00 pm.
Wilfy Rebimbus, the great composer, poet, writer and performer of Konkani passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of immortal songs, plays, stories and other literature. In his 50 years of active life as poet, composer, singer, playwright, novelist, he gave more than 3,000 immortal songs, hundreds of ‘Wilfy Nites’ and other performances, few plays, short stories and poetry etc. He was admired and adored by Konkani speaking people all over the world for his literary contributions and simplicity in life.
Wilfy’s birthday falls on April 2 and to make this a special day for Konkani Speaking people of Qatar, some of his ardent admirers, fans and people who had worked along with Wilfy have come together to organize a cultural event to commemorate WilfyÕs life and his contributions to Konkani.
The programme will have a presentation of a few selected songs of Wilfy by Doha’s Gulf Voice fame singers Rupert, Preema, Naveen and also by Veena and a tribute song composed by another well known Konkani composer, singer of Doha, Norbert Pereira.
The renowned Tulu artist Milaan Arun will also be taking part and will sing a Tulu song of Wilfy. As a special tribute, the young dancing couple of Doha, Jyothi and Sandeep will be presenting a contemporary dance ‘Nritya Roopak’ set to a haunting song of Wilfy from an old religious play and for the first time a reading of a short story written by Wilfy will be done by Stephany Lobo.
A scene from Wilfy’s famous play ’KD Bona B.A’ will be enacted by Alfred Crasta and Eddie. A few Goan singers of Doha are also going to present a number of songs. As a special and first time in Qatar, a Konkani Poetry Recitation will be held on the occasion.
Around ten Poets from Doha will be taking part and presenting their selected poems. The unique programme is co-ordinated by Eddie Sequeira, the long time assocaite of Wilfy with the support of many of Doha’s leading personalities and friends of Wilfy through the years; Felix Lobo, Gerry Pinto, Wilfred Fernandes and presidents and members of various Konkani organizations in Qatar. Wilfy’s daughter Veena and her family have also come forward to support and make this programme a memorable one.
