President Pratibha Patil to take part in Konkani Ekta Divas

Mangalore, 26 October 2010: The President Pratibha Devisingh Patil will be the chief guest at the Vishwa Konkani Ekta Divas to be held at Dr TMA Pai Convention Centre here on December 9. Announcing this to media persons in Mangalore on Tuesday, Eric Ozario, Gurkar, Mandd Shobhann said that the Divas is being celebrated as part of the first Vishwa Konkani Sanskrutik Mahamel (First World Konkani Cultural Convention) organised by Mandd Sobhann, the world’s leading Konkani cultural organisation here from November 25 to December 19.
He said the convention is aimed to showcase the beauty and variety of Konkani culture and to enhance the self-esteem of every Konkani. Around 75 troupes from around the world with over 1500 artistes belonging to various castes, creeds, dialects and region of Konkani will take part in this cultural festival and six troupes are being invited from abroad, he said.
He said Konkani speaking people belonging to 43 categories including Navayath Muslims, Siddis, Kharvis, Kudubis will also take part in the event. The launching ceremony of this event was held in Bangalore on June 20. G Janardhana Reddy, Minister for Tourism and Infrastructure was the chief guest while in Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was present on October 24.
The Goa curtain-raiser was held in Margao on July 18 by Digambar Kamat, Chief Minister of Goa whereas in Mumbai it was on August 9 by Ashok Chavan, Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The curtain-raiser in Canada was held on September 12 and in Gulf countries on September 24.
