Udupi: 2 held for stealing vans

Udupi, 12 June 2010: Udupi DCIB sleuths arrested two persons for stealing two Maruthi van from Baindur and proceeding to sell the same from Kundapur to Mangalore using fake number plates. The arrested are Gopal Acharya and Maidun alias Mayyadi.
When the police waylaid the van and asked for RC, they found that the vehicle was in someone else’s name. During the interogation, the accused said that they had stolen the Omni from Koderi in Baindur last May and were trying to sell using fake number plate.
They also said that they had stolen another Omni from Idur Kunjadi in Kollur during December and was sold to a person in Kumta. It was said that the accused were purchasing the vehicles from Finance and later getting it registered in their name and selling it to the scrap.
Later, using the documents, they used to sell the stolen vehicles. Maidin alias Mayyadi alias Monu was involved in four cases in Kundapur and Kota. The value of two Omni is said to be Rs 3.20 lakh.
Man killed
A person was killed when a Mahindra pick up vehicle knocked down the autorickshaw at Kothal katte in Kaup. The deceased has been identified as Suresh (30) of Aroor in Brahmavar. The Mahindra Pick Up was bound to Udupi from Mangalore. The auto was carrying saplings to a nursery near Ucchila from Brahmavar. A case has been registered.
