Karkala, 21 July 2011: Just 25 years ago our district was self-sufficient for the rice, vegetable and other grains, but today the situation has become such that, we look to the Ghat areas for completing our needs of the rice, vegetable and other grains. The agricultural lands are getting converted into house sites; the new generation is migrating in search of jobs. The greenery is reducing and with lack of fresh air for breathing, the health condition of people is getting deteriorated. Our elders were actively involved in the agricultural work and without any medicine they were living for 90 – 100 years. Agricultural work improves health condition, said Karnataka Konkani Sahithya Academy member B. Pundalika Marathe.
He was speaking in a program “Environmental awareness – Vanamahothsava” conducted by Catholic Sabha Karkala zone, at Karkala Christ King Church Hall on Sunday. He said that, the trees and plantation is getting destroyed with various reasons and the atmosphere temperature is increasing. Production of oxygen level has been decreasing. Hence, the organizations should continuously promote plantation of vegetables, medicinal plants, other plants and trees around the houses. The Vanamahotsava, instead of conducting annually, it should be a daily event, he said.
The program was presided over by Leena Menezes – President of Catholic Sabha Karkala Zone. Maxim D’mello welcomed the guests and the gathering. Treasurer Leo Sequeira and Former President Metilda Lasrado were present on the occasion. Catholic Sabha Secretary Irene Menezes proposed vote of thanks.
