MANGALORE: The 2007-08 batch of postgraduate students of St. Aloysius College, an autonomous institution under Mangalore University, who passed out in 2008-09, will not receive their degrees at the 28th convocation, according to a decision taken by the university.

Earlier, the Syndicate of the university had declined to award degrees to these students till the college remitted the overdue registration fee of Rs. 35.01 lakh to it. The college, which refused to make the payment, challenged the decision of the university before the High Court of Karnataka.

Replying to a question at a press conference here on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said that the court passed an interim order on April 1 on a writ petition filed by the college.

According to the interim order, “If any student of St. Aloysius College is eligible to receive any medal or award from the university in the ensuing convocation, such student shall be admitted to the convocation without insisting on payment of registration fee. And such admission and grant of award or medal shall remain subject to a final decision on the writ petition.”

The Vice-Chancellor said that following the interim order, the university verified if there were any students eligible to receive medals or awards at the 28th convocation. It had been found that “no student of St. Aloysius College is eligible to receive any award or medal from the university in the convocation”.“The university will not award degrees to students of that batch,” Mr. Murthy said.
