Udupi: Home Minister V.S. Acharya said on Sunday that the traffic system in Udupi would undergo a major overhaul shortly.
He was speaking after flagging off the first interceptor vehicle of the Udupi Traffic Police here.
The interceptor is equipped with digital camera with speed laser gun, breath analyser for alcohol, rooftop enforcement camera, digital video recorder, public address system with beacon lights and remote offence printing station.
Dr. Acharya said that signal lights would be installed at seven main intersections of the city soon. Since vehicle density had increased enormously in recent times, it had become essential to strengthen the traffic system. Of the estimated six lakh vehicles in the district, about three lakh were in Udupi alone, he said.
Ramblers would be constructed in place of road humps, wherever necessary. Road signs and blinkers would also be installed at various places here. Major roads in the city, including the Udupi-Manipal and Ambagilu-Kalsank were being widened for smooth movement of traffic. The Udupi-Manipal Road was being widened to allow vehicles to ply at 80 km an hour.
“The aim is to promote road safety and careful driving,” Dr. Acharya said.
