Udupi/M’Belle: Preparations for Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament 2018 in Full-Swing

Udupi/M’Belle, 11 Nov 2018: Preparations for the prestigious Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament to be held on Saturday, 17 November 2018 at St. Lawrence PU College Grounds, Moodubelle in aid of St. Lawrence Community Hall is in full-swing. This is a unique opportunity for the sports-lovers, especially volleyball fans to witness this high-powered volleyball tournament in which 10 reputed teams will vie with each other for the top position. More than two thousand spectators are expected to be part of this once in a life time experience.
Ten teams will participate in the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament. These teams are: Alvas sponsored by Lions Club, Moodubelle; Mysore University, sponsored by Sunrise Laundry; Chandan Chethan Kundapur sponsored by Sequeira Brothers; Sameer Team sponsored by Tata Sky and LIC; Sarafraz Stadium Friends sponsored by Vijetha; Mangalore Friends sponsored by ACT Dubai; Chinna Team sponsored by Nisha Caterers; Shivamogga Mix sponsored by SRS Ronald Shalini; Kalil Team sponsored by Family Fashions and Kolara Team sponsored by Planet Travels.
Attractive trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to three top winning teams. The Champions of the tournament will get Rs. 50,000/- and permanent trophy. The First Runners Up team will gain Rs.30,000/- and permanent trophy and Second Runners Up will get Rs.20,000/- and permanent trophy. Besides, five individual przes will be awarded to outstanding players.
The Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament will be inaugurated at 8 pm on Saturday, 17 November 2018. The chief guests for the inaugural function will be Commodore Jerome Castelino-Retired Officer of Indian Navy, Fr. Mahesh D’Souza-Principal of Don Bosco CBSE School, Shirva, Ms. Joyline Muriel Lobo-International Sportsperson in the Triple Jump and Raison Benette Rebello-International Volleyball Star.
Commodore Jerome Castelino from Moodubelle joined Indian Navy in 1953 as a sailor. After serving in this position for five and half years, he was commissioned as Sub-Lieutenant by the then President of India-Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan in November 1959. Gradually, Jerome Castelino was promoted to higher ranks and retired in June 1988 as Commodore.

While in the service of the Indian Navy, Commodore Jerome Castelino had participated in the Goa Liberation War (1961) and Indo-Pak Wars (1965) and (1971). During the Asiad Games in 1982, Captain Jerome Castelino was specially chosen to represent the Indian Navy as the member of the Finance Committee and his role in this committee was commended by the then Sports Minister-Mr. Bhuta Singh. Commodore Jerome Castelino was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal (VSM) on 26 January 1984 by the then Honourable President of India-Ghyani Zail Singh.
After retirement, Commodore Jerome Castelino served for as the General Manager of Applied Electronics Limited, Mumbai. In 1994, he returned to his native place Moodubelle with his wife Rose Celine and got himself involved in social work. He was the founder President of the Lions Club, Moodubelle and also served as the Dean of St. Lawrence Degree College.
Fr. Mahesh D’Souza
Fr. Mahesh D’Souza, a native of Moodubelle was ordained the first priest in the newly constituted Diocese of udupi in 2013. Thereafter, from 2013 to 2015, he served as Assistant Parish Priest at the Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur for two years and Mount Rosary Church for one year. During the same period he also served as the Headmaster of Milagres English Medium School, Kallianpur. From 2015, Fr. Mahesh D’Souza is the Principal of Don Bosco CBSE High School, Shirva.
Joyline Muriel Lobo
Joyline Muriel Lobo, who is 27 years old, is an international sports person in the triple jump and a national champion. At the state level, she has won the individual championship in athletics. Currently working at LIC of India, she is the record holder at the national level in LIC sports meets and has been individual champion at national level five times. For her stupendous achievements in sports, she has earned a number of awards and honours including the state government honour and cash prize.
Raison Benette Rebello
Raison Benette Rebello, son of Boniface and Jacintha Rebello of Muovathmudi, Gangolli who had taken to volleyball since childhood, has got an opportunity to represent the country at a young age. The fact that he competed with thousands of players all over the country and emerged as one of the chosen players for the national team on the basis of his talent is highly laudable.
Raison Benette participated in various tournaments held at national and international levels. The various volleyball tournaments in which Raison Benette participated are: Junior Nationals held at West Bengal and Youth nationals held at Maharashtra (2013); Junior Nationals and Youth nationals held at Rajasthan(Silver Medal) (2014); Tenth Asian Championship held at Colombo, Sri Lanka (2014); Senior Nationals and Federation Cup held at Tamilnadu-Gold Medal (2015); Senior Nationals held at Bengaluru and Federation Cup at Tamilnadu-Silver Medal (2016); Senior Nationals held at Kerala and Federation Cup held at Andhra Pradesh (2018).

As the great event is just few days away, the entire organization supervised by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Parish Priest of St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle has been working hard for the success of the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament 2018. Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, Assistant Parish Priest is the Convener of the Tournament Committee. He is assisted by Elias D’Souza as the Coordinator. The other Committee-in-charges are: Vincent Fernandes-Sponsorship and Advertisement; Denis Martis-Sports and Games; Victor D’Souza-Media and Publicity; and Joseph Martis-Logistics and Ground.
Under the leadership of Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, Elias D’Souza and various committee in charges and their teams the preparation for hosting the Lawrencian State Level Volleyball Tournament is progressing in full-swing.
Under the leadership of Vincent Fernandes and his team divided into five groups led by Vincent Fernandes himself, Henry Fernandes, Mrs. Meera Lobo, Gerald Fernandes and Elias D’Souza have been approaching sponsors and advertisers to raise funds for the great event.
Denis Martis and his team was successful in approaching ten state level volleyball teams and confirming their participation in the tournament supported by ten sponsors, one for each team.
Victor D’Souza as in charge of Media and Publicity has been busy designing the logo of the tournament, content of the banners sposnored by various donors and placing them at important places and road junctions.
The ground is under preparation and various logistic matters are being handled by Joseph Martis with enthusiasm and energy.
Regular meetings of the core committee and various other committees conducted by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, the Convener and Elias D’Souza, the Coordinator, constant information passed on by Elias D’Souza to all committee memebrs through WhatsApp Group have been the hallmarks of the excellent preparation that has been going on in anticipation of the conduct of this state level volleyball tournament. As the preparations for the tournament are in full-swing, sports lovers, especially volleyball fans can expect an exciting and exhilarating volleyball tournament on Saturday, 17 November 2018.
