Moodubelle, 30 March 2010: There are few things without which your home is incomplete and one of them is garden. A garden at home brings a refreshing change in our life and adds purity to the air we breathe in. While the interior decor of our homes are instrumental in creating aesthetic ambience within the four walls, the presence of a home garden in the surroundings gives a captivating look to the exteriors. Moreover, the present trend of house construction necessarily leaves space for home gardens or more specifically for kitchen gardens.

During my recent visit to home in Moodubelle, it was still winter and the time was right for the flowers to bloom. Hence I was able to click some pictures of the home garden plants and flowers before returning back to Doha. Few observations and some tips from here and there added with the freshness of those plants and flowers the thought of this article came out.

One of the oldest hobbies known to humans, gardening has withstood the test of time as a hobby. It is not only enjoyable but fruitful as well in more ways than one because plants actually bear fruits. One can grow his own flowers and vegetables and even fruits. Gardening is a hobby which gives one exercise and exposure to sunlight as well.

Home is a place where people live and pass most of the time. So the place where one lives should be according to one’s choice and should be good looking. A friend of mine said that gardens also have a role to play where vaastu is concerned. According to vaastu every house should have a garden with pleasing plants. One can even bring the nature indoors by growing indoor plants or with a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers.

Garden is the outer view generally of every house. So decorating one’s garden in the most likely way is a matter of appreciation. Everyone likes to have a collection of as many varieties of plants as possible in their garden. When one visits the homes of others, naturally he will have a look at their garden and search for any plants that he does not have and may borrow from them or buy from nurseries one such plant to add into his collection.

Gardening has created a good scope for plant nurseries and for those professionals who have specialized in gardening and landscaping ideas and also for those who supply relevant garden tools and equipments. Since the plants and flowers are required to be looked after regularly, one needs to own certain tools and pay heed to the tips and ideas frequently brought by those who are experienced in gardening or the gardening magazines.

The desire for colour may be one of the important elements sought by gardeners. But that does not mean colour has to be unusual or dramatic. One of the most distinct colours in all of the nature is green. Colour has tremendous impact on the overall personality of the garden. Because colour is one way to leave a very personal fingerprint in one’s yard.

Colour has a significant impact on the visual space. Muted or pastel colours, placed farther out in the landscape, visually expand the garden space and give the illusion of being farther away. Red, orange and yellow flowers appear closer than they are and are particularly effective in full sun. Placing light-coloured plants in shady areas brightens the space and makes it more visually interesting; dark plants will appear even darker and less noticeable.

Gardening is not just a hobby which is rewarding and interesting, but it also helps the environment and the rewards are worth the time and labour that one puts in. Plants are living entities. If one wants them to grow in his garden he has to treat them as such. They need to be taken care of as they are like pets and are to be taken care of. In return one gets that feeling of contentment watching them thrive. A good way to take care of them is to consider that plants might have some feelings too.
