New Delhi, 29 September 2010: Former India captain turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar may be axed from the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League that is expected to be heavily re-jigged with the change of guard at the BCCI at its 81st AGM on Wednesday, sources have told CNN-IBN.
There were three former India captains in the Governing Council, including Gavaskar, MAK Pataudi and Ravi Shastri and sources say that only Shastri is expected to retain his place. Two prominent cricketers from South Zone are in contention to be inducted into the council.
Sources have said that Anurag Thakur and Ranjib Biswal are likely to be inducted into the IPL GC, while IS Bindra and Farooq Abdullah are unlikely to retain their positions. While the reconstiution of the governing council will be a severe blow to the embattled suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi, sources say that the BCCI may not stop at just that when it meets for its Annual General Meeting.
Sources say that a majority in the BCCI want IPL COO Sundar Raman to be removed. According to the sources, a move is also being put forward to have a rule so that no IPL team owner is part of the Governing Council. That would mean Board president elect and Chennai Super Kings owner N Srinivasan would have to step down from the Governing Council.
Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to be appointed as head of the BCCI Finance Committee. The Board is also likely to send a showcause notice to the Rajasthan Royals. Meanwhile, sources added that all cases of financial misappropriation against former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya will also be dropped.
