Udupi, Jul 5, 2014 : The primary responsibility of the doctors is not to create panic in the patients by manipulating their health and mental conditions but to encourage them to lead a healthy life, said Dr H S Ballal, the Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University at the release of the second edition of Healthy Heart brought out by Manipal University Press (MUP) here at the University on Friday Jul 3.

‘Unfortunately, most of the healthcare professionals are resorting to unethical practices today,’ said Dr Ballal while emphasizing the value of a physician. The full-fledged books on Health Sciences series for general readers can generate common awareness about the medical conditions in one’s life, added Dr Ballal.

‘As heart is one the most important parts of the human body, there is the need for books that explain in detail about all the basic aspects of the heart, various diseases that affect the heart and its prevention. Such a book should be written for the lay people so that they can take care of themselves because, prevention is better than cure and cheaper in today’s world,’ said Dr Ballal. ‘This book serves that purpose by emphasizing on preventive cardiology,’ emphasized Dr Ballal.

Highlighting one of the objectives of MUP, Dr H Vinod Bhat - the Pro-Vice- Chancellor said, ‘MUP has priced this book competitively so that it can reach even common people. He stressed that knowledge should have no barrier to reach anyone. The earlier edition had sold all its 1000 copies in a period of 10 months and increased its demand from the public for the second edition with 2000 copies and this is the 30th publication of MUP in its 30th month.’

The details of how coronary interventions are performed, their relative indications and complications associated with the same are explained in simple terms. Brief explanation is also provided about how open-heart surgery and bypass are performed.
