Mangalore, 3 Jul 2014: Dakshina Kannada district MP Nalin Kumar Kateel inaugurated the newly-opened railway ticket reservation counter at District Commissioner’s office premises here on Thursday July 3.

MP Nalin thanked the reigning NDA government at the Center for the new ticket reservation counter.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Nalin said, ‘This public reservation service (PRS) counter is one among 3 gifts of the newly-elected NDA government to the coastal Karnataka. The first one is the PRS, the second one is the approving halt for Bangalore – Mangalore train services en route Neralakatte and Yedamangala railway station which will be inaugurated soon.’

‘We demand of more trains to this region. For this demand there should be an increase in number of passengers from this region. Hence more and more people should take the benefit of the railway services,’ urged MP Nalin.

MP Nalin further said, ‘Today we feel the need for the intercity trains, hence we have planned the Kasargod-Mangalore-Udupi train along with Subrahmanya- Mangalore intercity train. The work is in progress to bring the Konkan Railway regional office to Mangalore. There is also plan to add Mangalore sub-division to the Mysore division as a part of forming a separate Mangalore division that might take about 5 years as it is a long process.’

Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim after distributing the first ticket to a passenger said that this ticket counter has been opened for the convenience of people. The people who come to DC office for various purposes can also get their ticket booked and hence get their work done at the earliest instead of waiting in the railway station.

DC Ibrahim further said that  even though the counter is run by the government officials at present there are plans to hand over the functioning of the counter to the NGO’s of visually impaired or physically challenged.

DC Ibrahim hoped that this counter will be of great use to the people of Mangalore.

The Mangalore central railway station distributed 5.1 lac train tickets thus generating an income of Rs 2.5 crore.

The PRS that was inaugurated here on Thursday was the first one in Karnataka under Palghat division and eleventh under the division and has been started under the MP’s quota because a MP can sanction one PRS to his constituency.

The railway officials said that the counter will be open from 8.00am to 8.00pm.
