Mangalore, 17 Jun 2014: Rotary Mangalore Hillside Charitable Trust launched www.rakthadaan.com to help those in need of blood and donors as a pilot project during a function held at SDM Business Management College conference hall, here on Sunday June 15.

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Mangalore south MLA J R Lobo were the chief guests of the occasion.

Swami Dharmapalanath of Adichunchanagiri mutt, here, Rotary Club International district governor nominee Dr Bharatesh, SDM Education Trust director Dr Devaraj K, Rotary Mangalore Hillside president Geetanand Pai, Rotary Mangalore Hillside Charitable Trust chairman Vinayak Prabhu and Mangalore diocesan vicar general Fr Denis Moras Prabhu were present in the dais.

MLA Lobo launched www.rakthadaan.com on the occasion.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLA Lobo and Dr Bharatesh lauded the humanitarian deed of Rotary Mangalore Hillside Charitable Trust in launching the website for greater use of both those who need the blood and donors.

Speaking on the occasion Vinayak Prabhu  said that the website is designed such that any person can volunteer to donate blood, and any person who requires blood will get it in the shortest possible period. Care has been taken to ensure that details furnished by volunteers are not disclosed to a third party. On the other hand, as soon as persons request for blood, the website will send messages to 10 persons with the contact number of the person requesting blood. This fully automated system searches the data base and sends SMS only to persons with blood group sought. The area of the person who needs blood too is kept in mind. In case, if the system fails to get a positive reply within 10 to 15 minutes, SMSs is send to another 10 persons with the same blood group requesting for blood. Once the person gets blood, the donor will not get any message for the next three months, Vinayak said. Noting that Rotary Hillside has taken up Mangalore as base for this pilot project, he said it has plans to expand its scope to the state in future. ‘We are in touch with Rotarians in other districts to expand this project to their areas as well,’ said Vinayak.

Vinayak further said that the only hitch in this project is the TRAI approved SMS rate for their venture, which he said in on the higher side. ‘The rates if reduced will help us be more cost effective,’ added Vinayak.

Geetanand Pai welcomed the gathering. Rotary Mangalore Hillside secretary Anil Rao proposed vote of thanks.
