Apex court nullifies Karnataka govt decision to make Kan compulsory in schools
Bangalore, 07 May 2014: The Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down a decision of the Karnataka government making it mandatory for all primary schools in the state to teach in Kannada language.
“The government can’t impose mother tongue on linguistic minority for imparting primary education,” the SC said.
The schools had moved the apex court challenging the state government’s decision.
The government, schools alleged, had even threatened to withdraw their recognition if they failed to follow its order on making Kannada the medium of teaching.
The battle between the Karnataka government and schools over the medium of teaching had been going on for the past 20 years.

Forcing Kannada medium is not correct in private schools. But from 1st std. to 4th std., Kannada subject can be made compulsory in all the Govt. and Govt. aided schools in Karnataka state. Today the most forwarded countries like Germany, Japan, and Korea. Don\'t force their children to learn English..! English we have to use...but why it’s NO to Kannada...we have to take the initiative and encourage learning Kannada for our children in the beginning! One thing is sure that even majority of Kannadigas are not willing to send their kids to Kannada medium Schools and on the other side, Policy made by the Karnataka Govt. is now banned by SC. This is nothing but sad news for Kannada language. |
