Puttur: Vanamahotsav celebrated at St Philomena College

Puttur, Aug 05, 2014 : The department of zoology, Rovers and Rangers of St Philomena College, here in association with Karnataka forest department, Puttur division organised Vanamahotsava, the planting of saplings here recently.
The range forest officer Sridar P was the resource person, while addressing the gathering said, ‘The forest wealth in our country is extremely diverse as a result of huge variation in the topography of the country. Therefore, it is essential that we plant the saplings of different species to maintain biodiversity,’ said Sridar.
Sridar further said, ‘If 1 tree is felled, we should cultivate a habit of planting 10 saplings, so as to maintain the ecological balance.’
The College campus director Fr Antony Prakash Monteiro, in his inaugural address said, ‘There was a huge forest cover earlie,r but it is depleting everyday which has resulted in global warming. It is the duty of every individual to take initiative to increase the green cover.’
The College principal Professor Leo Norohna presided the programme.
The deputy range forest officer Krishnappa, Rangers unit director Kalandar Sharif was also present.
The forest department gave 150 saplings to be planted in the College.
The programme sensitised the students on the need to preserve landscape and to plant saplings at the backyard of their households.
Krithika and Keerthi presented the prayer song. The head of department of zoology Meenakshi and Kalandar Sharif welcomed the gathering. Fayal proposed the vote of thanks.
