Moodubelle, 29 Oct 2012: It is said that the seeds of greatness are sown in the childhood. This dictum can be applied to Roshan Joy Martis, one of the youngsters from Moodubelle who has climbed the ladder of success through inherent brilliance, hard work and research activities. Roshan’s brilliance has been evident right from his school days. His inquisitive mind had created an interest in him in understanding the secrets of nature such as gravity, electro-magnetics, atomic force, etc. As he continued his education in high school and Pre University, Roshan realized the interrelationship between natural principles and mathematics governing these. His pursuit of scientific knowledge took him through the path of technical education through Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) from where he acquired both B.E. and M.Tech. degrees and eventually to one of the most prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur from where he acquired Ph.D. degree.

Roshan Joy Martis

Roshan Joy Martis was born on 12 September 1980 in Moodubelle as the eldest son among two children of  Robert Martis and Jacintha Martis of Thirlapalke. Robert Martis, who had been working in Gulf has retired and settled down in his home village Belle. Robin, the younger brother of Roshan, after completing his BCA course has been working as a  software professional in Bangalore and is currently pursuing MCA.  He is also a Karate black belt 3rd Dan and an authorized instructor and a referee.

After completing seventh standard education in the Church Aided Higher Primary School in 1993, Roshan continued his secondary education in St. Lawrence High School and completed SSLC in 1996. While studying in X standard, Roshan was awarded second place in General Proficiency and First place in Science subject. He did his PUC studies in science in St. Mary’s Junior College, Shirva where he continued to win proficiency awards practically in all science subjects that he studied.

Having manifested his interest and brilliance in science subjects, Roshan was keen to pursue engineering education and joined Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) from where he Graduated in Electronics and Communication Engineering (B.E) in 2004.

While studying for engineering, Roshan secured third place in Project Exhibition in the Final Year Undergraduate Project “Code Excited Linear Prediction Codec for Electrocardiogram" on 26th May 2004.

Besides being intelligent and thorough in his studies, Roshan developed a knack for writing research articles along with few of his classmates which were presented in various seminars and conferences as well got them published in different scientific journals.

After completing his engineering graduation, Roshan Served as faculty at Canara Engineering College, Mangalore during 2005-2006.

Having set his sight to achieve greater heights in scientific and technological ladder, Roshan joined the Post Graduate Course in Engineering in the discipline of Digital Electronics and Advanced Communication at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Manipal Institute of Technology in the year 2006. He acquired  Master of Technology (M. Tech) degree  in Digital Electronics and Advanced Communication in 2008.

While studying for M.Tech. Roshan, along with two of his classmates Banik and Nayak published a research paper titled “Code excited linear prediction codec for electrocardiogram." He also secured first prize in paper presentation in "INTELLECT-04", a National Level Technical Symposium held in April, 2004 at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal.

Before making up his mind about his future course of study and research, Roshan joined  the Canara Engineering College, Mangalore as faculty member during 2005-2006. However, he continued his interest in research and presented along with Nayak D and Niranjan UC a research paper titled "Low Bit Rate CELP Codec for Electrocardiogram" in National Conference on Devices, Intelligent Systems and Communications - MITDISC 2005, held at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal  in September, 2005.

The yearning for further study prompted Roshan to give up teaching profession within a year and join Post Graduate Course in Engineering in the discipline of Digital Electronics and Advanced Communication at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University, Manipal in the year 2006. He completed Master of Technology (M. Tech) in Digital Electronics and Advanced Communication in 2008.

During the two years course, Roshan along with two other classmates presented a research paper titled "Stochastic Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based EEG clustering", National Conference on Biomedical Engineering- NCBME 2007 held at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal in October, 2007 which won the Best Paper Award under the Post Graduate category. The same team produced four more research papers which were presented at the national and international conferences and symposiums.

With a quest for further knowledge, that too in a different field of medical science Roshan joined School of Medical Science and Technology at the  Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, in September 2008 as Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in Department of Atomic Energy sponsored project (A sponsored project by DAE undertaken at IIT Kharagpur in the School of Medical Science and Technology).

Meanwhile, having a thorough research background and experience enrolled to the Ph. D. program at School of Medical Science and Technology, IIT, Kharagpur in January, 2009. He chose "Electrocardiogram Analysis for Arrhythmia Beat Detection using Machine Learning Techniques" as the title of this theses.

The journey of Roshan through the maze technical education to Ph.D. has a curious background. Roshan was inspired by the principles of nature like gravity, electro-magnetic, atomic force etc during his school days. Later in his high school and pre university education he realized the interrelationship between the natural principles and the mathematics governing these. He was trying to correlate the natural phenomenon in terms of the science and the mathematics which so far he learnt. He was good in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in his pre university studies.

After doing thorough research, collecting relevant material, analyzing the findings and putting down in writing, Roshan submitted the thesis in January 2012. He defended his theses during the Viva Voce held in March, 2012 following which he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree  on 30th of March, 2012.

The theses of Roshan is quite relevant to modern day medical science. Nowadays several thousands of people die world-wide due to sudden cardiac arrest. Due to advancements in medical instrumentation, terra bytes of information gets generated every day in different intensive care units (ICU), tertiary care hospitals and primary health care centers.

In a spectacular development of this century, the fusion and amalgamation of different techniques of information technology (IT), Computational Science, data mining and knowledge engineering etc. are taking place to provide more comfort and less mortality to human beings. Mining the physiological state and predicting onsets of fatal and life threatening conditions at the right time based on the large physiological information by various mathematical, statistical and computational models, and reduce false alarms in ICU is a challenge to biomedical and knowledge engineers. The information generating from various modalities at different scales needs to be integrated and mapped into the patient’s mortality state.

In view of this, the dissertation "Electrocardiogram Analysis for Arrhythmia Beat Detection using Machine Learning Techniques" addresses the issue of annotation of ECG beats into various types and will be an adjunct tool to the physicians. The accurate detection of different arrhythmias will assist in reducing false alarms and provide improved healthcare in the modern world. The developed techniques proposed in this dissertation are able to decipher the hidden complexities and non-linear interrelationships between various parameters and will be of immense use in electronic pacemakers, remote patient monitoring and tele-care applications.

While doing serious research for his doctoral  degree, Roshan found enough time to produce research papers as he did earlier and present them at national and international conferences as well as get them published in reputed journals. Along with other scholars Roshan produced ten highly acclaimed research papers. (See the list below)

The brilliant academic career, research acumen and leadership qualities of Roshan have been instrumental in getting him membership in some of the reputed professional bodies. These include: Graduate Student Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA; Graduate Student Member of Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) of IEEE, USA;. Chair of IEEE EMBS student club of IIT Kharagpur for the year 2010-2011; and Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), New Delhi.

Roshan had an opportunity to attend conferences in USA including IEEE UPP leaders summit held at Hotel San Francisco Marriott, San Francisco, CA, USA to represent the student branch of IIT Kharagpur  in August 2011 and the annual international conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, 2011 held at Hotel Marriott Copley Place, Boston, MA, USA  to present a technical paper authored by him in the oral presentation track of "Recent Advances in Time Frequency Analysis of Biosignals I".   Roshan also had the privilege of reviewing the  Journal of Mechanics in Medicine and Biology (JMMB), World Scientific publisher.

When asked about his hobbies while in school and colleges, Roshan said that he has an interest in listening to music. He had also participated in Quiz competition while studying at the MAHE University. Roshan has been an excellent organizer and had organized a number of events while studying for M.Tech at Manipal and doing research for Ph.D. at Kharagpur.

Presently, Roshan Joy Martis is working as Research and Development Engineer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic at Singapore.

Dear Roshan, It is an amazing achievement for a person to rise up from the grassroots to the highest echelons of science. Especially when you are surrounded by foxes and wolves. It is an achievement to be truly proud of. Overcoming all odds from different quarters, you have accomplished the feat- hats off. Never be pulled down by people with vested interests. Those who cannot do things themselves, will tell you that you cannot do it too. Do not fall prey for those false and irrelevant words. They are nothing but frustrations and jealousy pouring out of their lowly minds. Keep your hard work going on and work harder to achieve more in life. Best wishes in your future and career
