Udupi, 31 July 2011: The Udupi CMC has issued a ban order against using plastics below 40 microns within the city limits from August 1, informed CMC President Kiran Kumar. Speaking at the general body meeting held here on Saturday, he said a machine to check the quality of plastics has been purchased by CMC and all the shop keepers should test the plastics kept for sale or used in their respective shops. Besides, they should put boards before their shops and retail outlets informing that they don’t offer plastics below 40 microns for sale, he added.

The other issue that rocked the floor was the interference of the members in the affairs of wards that is not under their jurisdiction. Congress Member Anandi raised objection over the interference of Member Yashpal Suvarna in the affairs of Vadabandeshwara ward of which she is the councilor. She said she was in the process to make alternative arrangements in the overflooded areas in her ward owing to heavy rain, when Yashpal Suvarna intervened and took up the work for the easy flow of water that was accumulated in the area, she added.

After the hot debate confining to views and counter views and BJP and Congress members throwing words against each other, the President interfered and said one should be happy if people are relived from distress rather than creating mess over petty issues.

Member Dinaker Shetty demanded that immediate measures should be taken against irregular parking on either side of roads in Manipal. He said the vehicles are parked in an irregular way that has led to accidents. It is a disturbing fact that the vehicular movements and also pedestrians are put to trouble even to walk freely, he said.

Kiran Kumar said that despite the fact that CMC has repeatedly asked Manipal Police station to take action against irregular parking, there is no response from the police department, he said and added that a letter will be written to SP for the second time demanding immediate action so that the the department can display some “no parking” boards in the area.

The Members also demanded measures against traffic problem at Irodi circle as the vehicles rush from all the four sides leading to mishaps. The President opined that it is the toughest area where the traffic problems can seldom set right. However, we have spoken to auto-rickshaw drivers not to create traffic problems and vehicle drivers and bike riders should take maximum care while crossing the circle, he said.
