Students ‘raise their voice’ against graft

Mangalore, 29 July 2011: Several students under the aegis of Akhila Bharata Vidyarti Parishad took out a procession against the State and Union governments that had been accused of corruption.

 

“This is a movement to make youth raise their voice against corruption. We are not targeting any particular party or a politician,” said ABVP State president B.V. Vasant Kumar, who led the march. Mr. Kumar said proper action need to be taken against all those involved in corruption. “We cannot allow our country to suffer because of corrupt practices,” he said.

 

The students from different colleges joined the ABVP’ s call for a march against corruption from Jyothi Circle to the Town Hall “We just boycotted classes to be a part of this march,” said a student from Canara College. To a question, the student said: “This is against the whole political class, which is involved in corruption.”

 

 

There were many who had joined their classmates, despite not convinced about the purpose that such a march would serve. “This march has become a regular feature,” said Suhas, a student from the Sharada College. He said it was wrong to blame political parties for corruption. “We are responsible as we pay bribe to get our work done,” he said. The march began with the sounding of conch. As a large number of students marched, there was disruption in the movement of vehicles between Jyothi Circle and Hampankatta Circle.

 

At a function in the Town Hall, Akshata, an ABVP activist and student from Women’s Polytechnic, expressed her concern against government’s lack of seriousness in prosecuting persons charged with corruption. She said the Centre should take action to seize the money deposited illegally in Swiss banks.
