Mangalore, 20 July 2011: The state government has cleared the much awaited tourism projects including a golf course at Tannirbavi and a ropeway connecting Sultan Battery with Tannirbavi.

The government will award contract for the construction of the golf course on public-private partnership (PPP) mode soon. Speaking at the inaugural of Sanskrathika Kalotsava-2011, a cultural fest for school and college students organised as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of Mangalore Airport at Town Hall here on Monday, deputy speaker N Yogish Bhat said cabinet notes have already been prepared for both the projects. Contracts will be awarded for golf course project on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis for a prescribed period after a final discussion in the cabinet on Thursday, he said adding that the project will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore in 100 acres land at Tannirbavi.

Talking about the proposal of constructing a hanging footbridge between Sultan Battery and Tannirbavi, Yogish said, it will be the largest and widest one in India considering its various features.
Earlier, the government had sanctioned Rs 6 crore for the construction of a si

gle lane cable suspension hanging bridge of five feet wide for pedestrians across Phalguni river to connect Sultan Battery and Tannirbavi. As per the new proposal of Rs 12 crore, width of the bridge will be 10 feet and the total length of bridge will be around 500 metres with 250 metres of unsupported span. Pre-galvanised, pre-tensioned and non-corrosive cable of 120 mm diameter will be used for the construction of bridge, he said adding that as per new plan prepared by the experts of NITK, the height of the ropeway will be 25 feet.

Extension of runway

District in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar promised that the government will bear 25% of the cost for the extension of runway in Mangalore airport from the existing 8,000 feet to 9,000 feet. It may require around Rs 175 crore to extend the runway. The government has already reserved Rs 15 crore in the budget for the purpose and Rs seven crore was released for the development of roads to airport, he added.
