CL T20: Bangalore romp home against Guyana

Centurion, 13 September 2010: An all-round effort by Jacques Kallis (43 runs and three wickets) helped Royal Challengers Bangalore began their Champions League campaign with a resounding win over minnows Guyana at SuperSport Park on Sunday.

Experienced duo of Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid (33 off 34) began well in pursuit of a meager 104-run target set by Guyana and put up a 75-run stand before Dravid was clean bowled by off-spinner Royston Crandon in the eleventh over.

Robin Uthappa (25 off 8) started off where he left in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and spanked a boundary and two sixes off Christopher Barnwell. He completed Challengers’ victory in the next over.

Earlier, the Caribbean champions Guyana had no answers to on-song Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bowlers who made life difficult for the batsmen throughout the 20 overs and in the end bowled a helpless team out for a paltry 103.

 

For RCB, Jacques Kallis toyed with the inexperienced Guyanese batting line-up and picked up three wickets, while Praveen Kumar took two wickets with his nagging line and length. Dale Steyn, Nayan Doshi and Anil Kumble also chipped in with a wicket each.

For Guyana, none of the batsmen except Christopher Barnwell crossed the 20-run mark.

Royal Challengers’ bowlers proved Anil Kumble’s decision to bowl first right as both Dale Steyn and Praveen Kumar stifled Guyana’s batsmen from the word go with their discipline.

After keeping Guyana openers quiet initially, Praveen struck for Royal Challengers as he got rid of opener Travis Dowlin (10 off 17) in his third over.

Ramnaresh Sarwan started off brilliantly, hitting a six over extra cover off Jacques Kallis, but then chopped a straight delivery on to his stumps.

S Chattergoon (18 off 17) became the victim of one-hand-pick-up throw by Cameron White that hit the stumps direct.

Narsingh Deonarine tried to break the shackles, but he too holed out at deep mid-wicket to Ross Taylor.

Kallis then came back to take two quick wickets (Jonathan Foo and Derwin Christian). South African pacer Dale Steyn did the clean-up job after that with two late strikes that ended the Caribbean champions’ innings for a paltry 103.
