Barkur, 05 Nov 2023: It’s a pleasant feel to visit SVV National Eng Medium School at Heradi Barkur this morning with newly appointed Correspondent Mr Rajaram Shetty. The open house meeting of teachers, parents and wards to evaluate the progress reports was going on in the respective classrooms.

What caught my attention was the Exhibition of Medicinal Herbs and plants, organised by the students.

As part of learning through practical means, under the initiative of Head Mistress Mrs Likitha Kotary and her staff, with the keen and active involvement of Mr Rajgopal Nambiar, the President of PTA, himself an expert of Ayurvedic cure, organised an exhibition of medicinal plants today 4th November,  2023. The activity was conducted by the students of class 5 and onwards till X. The enthusiastic student leaders, senior students, volunteers welcomed and Parents of students and introduced / explained various shrubs, leaves, plants in pots etc. Many rare plants were brought by Mr Nambiar from his botanical garden all the way from Siddhapur…

Broadly the exhibition was divided into:

Short Charts neatly handwritten, explaining medicinal values and properties of the plants

Brief Fact cards about the plants

Demonstration of actual plant saplings

In the side-wings, flower plants also exhibited.

Students brought various saplings like Neem, Tulsi, Bramhi, Aloevera, Guduchi, Ajwain, Mint, Calendula etc. Charts & fact cards contained information about these plants as well as plants like Amla, Lanvender, turmeric, ginger etc. as there were many…. its difficult make an all-inclusive list.

To make the event more interactive some students had quiz questions for the parents about the exhibited plants & charts. Kids & parents had a good interaction & the students learnt about the medicinal values of these plants through these activities.

Correspondent of the National ITI, Mr Ramachandra Kamath, who was present along with Mr Rajaram Shetty, expressed their satisfaction to witness the keen interest of students and guidance of teachers in the innovative learning of home medicine, treatment for minor ailments – cough, headache, wounds and so on.
