Moodubelle, 19 July 2010: Bradley and Brenda Martis, brother and sister have a number of common achievements and interests which are rare to be found among siblings. Both of them were top scorers in seventh standard and SSLC in their respective batches, both attended the same junior college and eventually joined the same engineering college. While, Bradley has completed his engineering studies, Brenda is halfway through. Both of them possess leadership qualities. While Brenda has completed her term as the Secretary of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) Moodubelle Unit, Bradley has been elected as the President of ICYM for the year 2010-2011. Benedict and Flavia Martis of St. Francis Xavier II Ward, Kattingeri, are the proud parents of Bradley and Brenda. Both Benedict and Flavia were the Presidents of the Lions Club and the Lioness Club of Moodubelle respectively for the year 2009-2010 and Bradley was the President of the Leo Club for the same period.
Bradley Oscar Martis:
Bradley Oscar Martis was born on 29th July 1987. He had his education from first to seventh standards in the Church Aided Higher Primary School, Moodubelle emerging as the topper in the seventh standard public examination with 93.33 per cent marks in 2000. Continuing his education in St. Lawrence High School, Bradley once again manifested his scholarly calibre by being the highest scorer in the SSLC examination in his batch in 2003 with 82.24 per cent marks.
While in school, Bradley had developed an interest in signing. He was good in quiz competition and had won few prizes. Being a popular student, Bradley was often chosen as the class monitor right through the higher primary and high school stages. While in the 9th standard, he had secured second place in the General Proficiency. Bradley, was an active member of the Young Christian Students (YCS) and Young Catholic Movement (YCM) and was the Vice President of the YCS for some time. The group led by him had scored highest points in the year-round YCS activities in 2003.
At a very young age Bradley had realised the value of time and extra learning. While in the tenth standard, Bradley made use of the computer learning facility that was provided by the institution and completed Diploma in Office Management attending computer lessons before the beginning of the classes, during lunch break and even after the end of the classes in the evening.
After completing SSLC as top scorer in St. Lawrence High school in 2003, Bradley proceeded to St. Mary’s Junior College, Shirva for PUC Science studies. Securing a first class in the PUC examination in 2005, Bradley joined Nitte Engineering College from where he completed the engineering studies in Computer Science.
Meanwhile, Bradley acquired other diplomas in hardware and networking from the Manipal Institute of Computer Education (MICE) such as Diploma in Hardware Maintenance and Networking, Diploma in Redhat Linux Administration, Diploma in Oracle 9i and Diploma in Application Development Using VB-Net, from NIIT. Aiming high in the electronics field, Bradley has already cleared the first out of seven on-line examinations of the Microsoft Certified Professional Certification and is presently preparing for the next examination.
As his parents, Benedict and Flavia Martis have been the charter members of the Lions and Lioness Clubs since the last fourteen years, Bradley also became the member of the Leo Club and held the posts of Treasurer, Secretary and President.
While doing his engineering course, Bradley was the member of the ICYM and was once elected as its Vice President earlier. He says that the ICYM has provided not only himself but other youths of the parish an opportunity to develop leadership qualities and a platform to promote their artistic talents. Bradley has acted in a number of skits and participated in group dance performances during the cultural programmes arranged by the ICYM.
Presently, Bradley is the new President of the ICYM for the year 2010-2011. As the President of ICYM he has a number of plans to rejuvenate the ICYM in Moodubelle and increase its membership and activities. He feels that this year being the Centenary Year of the foundation of the parish of Moodubelle, the youth has greater responsibility in the celebration of the Centenary Year by actively involving themselves in various functions and programmes.
Brenda Olivia Martis:
Brenda Olivia Martis born on 28th July 1990 as the second child of Benedict and Flavia Martis had her own brother, Bradley as role model in studies and other activities. Like Bradley, Brenda also had her education in the Church Aided Higher Primary School, securing the first rank in the Seventh standard Public Examination in 2003 along with five other students in the Udupi District scoring 98.5 per cent marks.
Continuing her studies in St. Lawrence High School, Moodubelle, Brenda secured first rank among the students of her batch in SSLC examination in 2006 by securing 91 per cent marks. She also secured first position in the High School in the Diocesan Catechism Examination conducted by Mangala Jyothi, Mangalore with 96 per cent marks. Following the footsteps of her brother Bradley, Brenda also joined St. Mary’s Junior College, Shirva for PUC Science course and secured 80 per cent marks which enabled her to get admission for the Engineering Course in Computer Science in the Nitte Engineering College where she completed four out of eight semesters each with 9 plus grade in the scale of 1 to 10.
Brenda can be considered as a prodigy in the sense that she has been not only excellent in her studies, but also had many other talents which she developed during her school days. She has been a good singer and has been a part of the church choir since she was in the third standard. Even now, whenever she is free from her hectic engineering studies, Brenda participates in choir singing in the church during festive masses. She says that it was Sr. Sharol (BS) who encouraged her to sing and join the choir. In singing competitions organised by schools through Pratibha Karanji, Catholic Sabha and YCS in places such as Shankerpura, Brenda had won a number of prizes.
Besides singing, Brenda has been good in elocution and debating both in Kannada and Konkani. She had participated in various elocution competitions while in higher primary and high school wining prizes in most of the competitions organised by the Catholic Sabha-Udupi Varado, Pratibha Karnaji, Rotract Clubs and Kannada Cultural Department. Brenda has a flair for writing poetry and a number of her poems have been published in the parish journal-“Suvaad”. While in the seventh standard in the higher primary school, Brenda was the member of the Volleyball team which secured second position at the Zonal Volleyball tournament.
Brenda had appeared for ‘Chintan’ Series of special examinations in Mathematics and Social Sciences at the district level and passed with good marks. While in the eighth standard she secured first position in Udupi Taluk in the ‘Chintan Social Science’ (2004) and 6th position in ‘Chintan Science’ in 2006.
While studying in the school, Brenda was an active member of the YCS and YCM. Since 2008 she has been a member of the ICYM. As the Secretary of the Moodubelle Unit of ICYM for the year 2009-2010, Brenda was instrumental along with other office bearers in organising the ‘Talents Day’ on 8th September 2009 which was a great success.
Like Bradley, Brenda also has been the member of the Leo Club. She actively participates in the activities of the Lions Club by singing the prayer songs at the beginning of monthly meetings or any other programme. She has been also a member of the compeering team in the Lions Club functions.
The parents of Bradley and Brenda, Benedict and Flavia are quite proud of their children who are greatly encouraged and supported by them in their education and development of other talents. Like parents, Bradley and Brenda are quite simple, humble and down-to-earth. They neither flaunt their scholarship nor their talents, but work quietly in pursuing their interests and studies. It is indeed worthwhile to follow the good example of both Bradley and Brenda in pursuing ones dream to achieve success in education and using ones spare time in a constructive way by acquiring additional qualifications which would be of great help when one seeks to build his or her career.
Bellevision congratulates Bradley on being elected as the new President of ICYM and hopes that under his leadership the ICYM Unit of Moodubelle would rise to new heights as a disciplined and dedicated band of youth. Bellevision also wishes Brenda success in her further education.
