Mangalore, 23 Apr 2014: Bangalore-based Rangamantapa theater troupe will be staging Kannada play, Gandhi Banda (Gandhi arrives) at the aegis of Bantara Matra Sangh Mangalore taluk Committee at A B Shetty auditorium, Bunts Hostel, here on Friday April 25 at 6.00pm.
Dr H Nagaveni is the playwright of this Kannada play, directed by Champa Shetty and Prakash Shetty Suratkal.
The play has the background of Gandhi’s visit to Tulunadu shedding light on the richness of Tulu culture, caste and clan prejudices, poverty that prevailed about 80 years ago. The Tulunadu distinct worship such as Bhoota Kola, Kambla – heroic folk art and Kangilu – a practice to wade off evils from different household etc are also incorporated in the play.
The play signifies the need to follow the ideals of Gandhi to eliminate chaos in the society, the need for freedom to women, change in mindset of people. Gandhi’s concern to uplift the lowly in the society enhances the need for social reform. Gandhi is being projected in different forms to find true values in ones life.
The play has been staged in Bangalore and other districts of Karnataka, Mumbai, New Delhi, Odisha wherein the richness of Tulunadu being conveyed successfully to the audience.
