Mangalore, 13 Jan 2014: The department of general surgery of Father Muller Medical College organized Professor Venkat Rao Memorial Annual CME and State Level Quiz at decennial memorial hall here on Saturday January 11.
This programme is being organized every year in the memory of the restless visionary Professor Dr Venkat Rao who served the institution during its early stages.
Nitte University vice chancellor and RGUHS former vice chancellor Dr S Ramanand Shetty was the chief guest of the occasion.
Father Muller Charitable Institutions director Fr Patrick Rodrigues presided the function.
The speakers for the day were Bangalore-based Narayana Group of Hospitals renowned cardiac surgeon Padmabhushan Dr Deviprasad Shetty and KMC Hospital head of department of urology Professor Dr G G Laxman Prabhu.
The inaugural function began with introducing the legendary Prof Dr Venkat Rao by Father Muller Medical College Hospital CMO Dr Mathias.
‘Professor Venket Rao was the remarkable surgeon of the era. He has served Father Muller Charitable Institutions for about 3 decades from late 50s - 80s. If Father Muller is the founder, the 3 pillars who shouldered this institution were Professor Dr Venket Rao, Dr K S Shetty and Dr V V Mody. Professor Dr Venket Rao was a surgeon par excellence performing almost any surgical procedures. He did not rest till he met his goal. His simplicity, generosity, dedication and hard work were always admired,’ said Dr Mathias. He urged the medical fraternity to carry forward the legacy Professor Venkat has left behind.
The dignitaries inaugurated the programme by lighting of the lamp.
Dr S Ramanand Shetty while addressing the gathering said, ‘Father Muller Charitable Institutions is giving quality education and health care,’ said Dr Shetty. He further said, ‘CME has taken major role in the field of education. It is conducted to enhance our skill and competency, it is important as we are in the era of changing phase,’ said Dr Shetty.
‘According to MCI medical profession is a dynamic in nature and for doctors there is no end for learning. Therefore ‘Learn, Unlearn and Relearn’. This is a technology driven profession. Technology is dominating, therefore people behind the technology has to be knowledgeable. If you don’t adhere to technology you cannot survive. But at the same time use it judiciously,’ said Dr Shetty.
Fr Patrick Rodrigues, speaking about Professor Dr Venket Rao said, ‘There are some who become legend during their life time and some become legend after they die. Professor Venket Rao is the legend for lifetime. He had so much to give, enlighten and motivate. He is the light to the young minds,’ said Fr Rodrigues.
During the CME, the speaker, Padmabhushan Dr Deviprasad Shetty, a renowned heart surgeon urged to anticipate a huge growth in the medical field in the coming 5 years. Therefore, it is important to have a vision so as to face the challenges in the coming years. Further, he also explained the present challenges faced by the doctors and advised the doctors to help themselves and to bring about a change.
Professor Dr G G Laxman Prabhu gave a broader idea about the stone diseases.
This was followed by the Quiz conducted by the Quiz Master Father Muller Medical College Hospital department of general surgery Assistant Professor Dr Sameer.
Medical students across the state participated in this quiz. First prize was bagged by KMC, Mangalore, the second prize by Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore and third prize by KMC, Manipal.
