Udupi, 08 September 2010: The Feast of Blessing of New corns-Nativity of Our Lady ’Monthi Festh’ was celebrated with much pomp and colour, with hundreds of children and adults alike showering flowers on the statue of the Nativity of Mother Mary to mark the Birth Day of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi.
The ceremony started at 7-50 a.m. with the blessings of the New Corns- ’Konsiyo’ by Rev. Fr. Mathew Vas and Fr. Melwyn Noronha accompanied, with the singing of the Hymns in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Verieties of flowers with hundreds of colours was the beauty of the ceremony. The church was packed to capacity and even in the yard a pandal was put up for the first time, to accommodate devotees. While the showering of the flowers was going on, showers of rain also accompanied to show that it is showers from above, to add jubilation to the celebrations.
The Holy Mass was concelebrated by Rev. Dr. Baptist Menezes, Episcopal Vicar,Udupi, Rev. Fr. Mathew Vas and rev.Fr. Melwyn Noronha. The homily preached by the Episcopal Vicar was very lively, addressing the children, young, and the old alike and to have a feast of vegetarian food together with the family members and (including neighours - non- Catholics wherever possible). It was a recollection of the past days in the rural Udupi and D.K. Districts, where the New crops is available for this feast.
At the end, the New Corn was distributed to all the faithful and sugar cane was given to those who had brought flowers and also to those present.
It was a glorification of the feast by one and all with the singing of Choir which was lively as all sang with enthusiasm and glorified Mother Mary’s Birth Day.
