Udupi, 31 August 2010: In a move to strengthen the Coastal Security Police, government through the Home Guards recruited 123 candidates especially from the coastal belt, at a selection parade held at Police Training Grounds, at Chandu Maidan Udupi. Though the Home Guards, through a selection parade recruited up to 300 candidates, only 123, after a six months training would be posted along the coast in Udupi district by the Coastal Security Police.
The selection process included measurement of height, weight and chest measurement, evaluation of fitness through 100 mtr race, long jump and shot put throw. Candidates from the coastal region, especially swimmers and divers have been preferred at the selection camp.
The first phase of training, which includes march fast, saluting etc would be done at the Home Guards unit office in Udupi and Malpe. In the second phase they would be subjected to thorough training in 14 subjects at Bangalore. Those selected for CSP would be given additional training too.
Home Guard Commandant Ganapathi Bhat said that the purpose of strengthening the CSP using Home Guards was not only to counter terrorism, but also to manage situations like possible floods, tsunami etc. Initially, Home Guards appointed for CSP would get the posting for at least 10 days a month, with remuneration of Rs 150 per day.
He also said that the Department of Home Guards has been asked to recruit asmany as 666 personnel for CSP throughout the state. Inspector of Coastal Security Police C Kiran said the Home Guards posted by CSP would be utilized to gather intelligence, as they would be locals and would be well aware of acquainted and the strangers.
