Mangalore,5 Sep 2013: Dakshina Kannada ZP and district public instructions department in collaboration with the Teachers’ Day Celebration Committee and Teachers Welfare Fund, Bangalore, held Teachers’ Day at Town Hall here on Thursday September 5.
Inaugurating the programme MLC Monappa Bhandary said, ‘Earlier there was a tradition where pupils were taught by Guru in the natural environment. This type of education helped us to cultivate better values and character. Teachers are the real architects of society,’ said MLC Monappa.
‘Education must render importance to the culture of this land. Teachers at the primary levels play the maximum role in building the personality of an individual, added MLC Monappa.
Sixty-five retired teachers were felicitated for their meritorious service during the programme.
MLA J R Lobo in his presidential address said, ‘In this world achievers in their respective fields are what they are because of teachers. Even I was trained as a teacher but my fortune was better in another field. The teachers who are felicitated here are a role model for us. Teachers are an architect of an individual’s future,’ said MLA Lobo.
‘Teachers provide knowledge and skills to students, but they also need to give more importance in teaching human values and humanity. The current education has become a business; therefore teachers need to maximize their role in transforming the society,’ urged MLA Lobo.
Teachers B Gururaj Bhat, Abdul Samad P and Gopal Krishna Bhat who were felicitated on the occasion also spoke.
Speaking on the occasion, Kateel – Durgaparameshwari First Grade College principal M Balakrishna said, ‘Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar added the name of his teacher and guide ’Bhimrao’ to his own name so that his guru’s memory may last forever. A teacher was called as Acharya, Uppadhyaya, then Guru, Master and later when the teacher was known as ‘Miss’ the concept of teacher was missed,’ said Balakrishna.
Balakrishna also explained with examples various situations in society which are taking a turn for the worse.
With an example, Balakrishna also narrated how the cell phone can cause a negative impact on the mind of students and increase crimes.
Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan joint director Philomena Lobo also spoke on this occasion.
ZP vice-president Rithesh Shetty, ZP member Asha Suvarna, Jayanthi, Block Education Officer (BEO) Lokesh C, Tahsildar Shivappa H Lamani and others were present on this occasion.
