Mangalore, 20 Aug 2013 (TOI): A historic temple in Mangalore will shut its doors on devotees wearing revealing and tight-fitting dresses, while allowing comfortable and modern wear like denims and salwars. The move by Kadri Manjunatheshwar temple comes close on the heels of a similar dress code announced by some temples in neighbouring Goa.
According to the Kadri temple, men and women cannot enter its premises wearing dresses that do not fully cover the body. Shorts and figure-hugging dresses are banned. Temple authorities took the decision following complaints from devotees that tourists were entering the shrine in dresses that could be called inappropriate. Boards at the entrance to the temple list the dresses deemed improper.
Temple administrative officer Ningaiah said, "We don’t ask devotees to wear a particular type of dress. All that we insist on is a proper dress." The temple, in fact, introduced a dress code some weeks ago, and the devotees responded to it positively.
