Udupi, 07 Aug 2013: A couple was burned alive in a room of a house that belongs to the lineage family of Moodabettu – Kambalakatta – Katapady Beedu, near Padubidri, here on Tuesday August 6 early morning.
The deceased has been identified as forty-eight-year-old Vijay Shetty and his wife thirty-eight-year-old Chandrika.
Vijay was engaged as sub contractor of Navayug Constructions who are executing the works of four-lane conversion of NH 66. He was living along with his elderly mother – Somavati and his daughter fifteen-year-old Jyotsna in the house. The room where Vijay and Chandrika slept was fully gutted in fire that was mystery.
Its not clear whether it’s an accidental fire or suicide, as the fire was cited on Tuesday early morning, in the room that has not easy access.
The city fire brigade arrived at the spot and extinguished the fire, while the social activist Soori Shetty helped in retrieving the dead bodies.
The district in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Tahsildar Abhijin, R I Ganesh Balegar also visited the grieving family.
ACP Santosh Kumar, Kaup circle inspector Shivanand Valikar, Kaup sub-inspector Archana, Shirva sub-inspector K R Nayak also visited the spot and probe is under way.
