Udupi, 11 Jun 2013: The service bus operators staged a flash-strike on Monday June 10 at the backdrop of an incident of an assault on one of their bus driver by a local BJP leader on Sunday June 9 night. Thousands of regular commuters to faraway locations were inconvenienced owing to surprise strike.
Yashpal Suvarna, local BJP leader and DK district fisheries marketing Federation president along with 4 of his accomplices had assaulted the Vishal bus driver Manjunat for not giving way for their car whilst they were returning from Mangalore at about 8.40pm on Sunday. They have also assaulted Ayra bus driver Shamsuddin and co-passenger Laxman for intervening in the incident.
The critically wounded Manjunat was admitted in a week. Kaup police registered a case in this regard.
Meanwhile, the service bus staff staged a surprise-strike here on Monday morning, to condemn the barbarous attack on one of their colleague. The frequent travelers to Kundapur and Mangalore were extremely inconvenienced in this regard.
The agitating bus employees did not called off the strike, despite the police tried for a truce. They demanded the police to arrest the persons responsible for the assault. They also tried to block other vehicles transporting the stranded passengers. When the chaos prevailed, the police arranged for state-run buses to accommodate long-distance passengers to reach their locations.
The bus services resumed on Monday afternoon, when the accused Yashpal Suvarna surrendered at Kaup police station and legal procedures began.
The flash-strike caused distress to thousands of passengers, office goers and general public.
