Padubidri, 19 July 2010: Pooja, 22 year old granddaughter of Belle Badagumane late Hiriyanna Shetty and a relative of Sakaram Shetty, proprietor of Manoj Bar, Dendoorukatte died in a tragic road accident at Padubidri on Saturday, 17th July 2010 when she along with her friend and classmate Nikita were waiting for a bus to go to Nikita’s house at Bada Yermal. Nikita who was also seriously injured in the accident is in the hospital.
Both Pooja and Nikita had completed the sixth semester of engineering at the Nitte Engineering College had been coming to Padubidri to do a four months’ project on the construction workers. After completing the day’s work, Pooja and Nikita decided to go to the latter’s home at Yermal and were waiting for the bus. However, a truck loaded with timber on its way from Mangalore to Mumbai in order to avoid collision with an express bus that had over taken on NH-17 severed to the left side at the spot where both Pooja and Nikita were waiting for the bus and were knocked down. Due to the impact of the accident, Pooja breathed her last before shifting to the hospital where as Nikita was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Pooja had studied up to SSC in Poona. Later she continued her PUC studies at the Kateel Junior College where she had scored 89 per cent marks. Her father Gunakara Shetty had passed away four years earlier. In spite of difficulties Pooja wanted to study further and doing her engineering course staying with her mother at Kodetturu Gutthu at Kinnigoli. Pooja and Nikita, daughter of Karunakara Shetty of Bada Yermal had been very good friends. But fate separated them in a strange way and the life of a promising young girl has been cut short by the negligent driving of both the overtaking bus and the truck.
