Moodubelle, 11 July 2010: The activities of the National Service Scheme (NSS) of St. Lawrence PU College were inaugurated on Saturday, 10th July 2010 at 3.30 pm in the College Hall by Mr. Maxim D’Sa, the ex-student of the college and proprietor of ‘Primax’.
The inaugural programme was presided over by Fr. Paul Sequeira, Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College. NSS Unit leader, Sunil of Second Year Arts welcomed the guest and the volunteers. Mr. Edward Larsen D’Souza, NSS Programme Officer in his introductory address traced the origin of the National Service Scheme in India in general and in Karnataka in particular. He explained the aims and objectives of the NSS and the various daily and annual activities that the NSS Unit of the College would be undertaking including the annual camp.
Mr. Maxim D’Sa formally inaugurated the NSS activities by lighting the lamp followed by Fr. Paul Sequeira, Mr. Edward Larsen D’Souza and the NSS Unit leader, Sunil.
In his message on this occasion, Mr. Maxim D’Sa recalled his student days in the same PU College and pointed out that the NSS activities helped him in developing certain positive qualities have been very useful in his life. He made an appeal to the students to take the NSS activities seriously along with their studies.
Fr. Paul Sequeira, in his presidential address to the NSS volunteers said that the chief aim of the NSS is providing service to the society and nation. By doing so the NSS volunteers would develop their personality and imbibe a spirit of service. NSS provides an opportunity to the students for social service. He also pointed out that since its inception the NSS Unit of the PU College has been functioning very well because of the enthusiasm and dedication of the volunteers and the guidance given by the NSS Programme Officers.
The NSS Unit in St. Lawrence PU College had started in 2005 with Mr. Naveen Correa as the Programme Officer who continued till 2009. Presently, Mr. Edward Larsen D’Souza is the Programme Officer. The NSS Unit comprises of 100 student volunteers, 50 from First Year and 50 from Second Year PUC. Out of the 100 volunteers 50 are boys and 50 girls.
The inaugural programme was compeered by Linesh Marwin D’Souza of Second Year PUC Arts and vote of thanks was proposed by Deeksha of Second Year Arts.
