Udupi: Bishop Dr Gerald I Lobo urges to Learn Konkani in Schools for sustaining Mother Tongue

Udupi,26 Mar 2013: ‘Konkani is our mother tongue. By reading and learning it we have become intellectuals. But in the present modernized world, we have lost interest and thus forgotten the language. It is our duty to preserve the language and promote it to next generation. Since state government has given us an opportunity to learn Konkani language in schools, we need to utilize this opportunity to make our mother tongue rich, said Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo of Udupi diocese.

 

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of forty-day Konkani Awareness Drive at Milagres Cathedral, here on Sunday March 24, Bishop Dr Gerald commended the imitative taken by Konkani Prachar Sanchalan to promote Konkani language and culture.

 

 

Meanwhile, Konkani street play `Konkani Mhozo Fuddaar’, by playwright Arun Raj Rodrigues and directed by Christopher D’Souza was staged by the artists of Konkani Kalakul theater troupe.

 
Cathedral parish priest Fr Stanley Lobo and Bishop’s secretary Fr Henry Mascarenhas were present on the occasion.

 

Victor Mathias welcomed the gathering. Konkani Prachar Sanchalan president Roy Castelino proposed vote of thanks.

 

The drive was flagged off in Mangalore on February 15, with the co-operation of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy to create awareness to learn Konkani in schools. The street play was performed in 40 places of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

 

Darrel D’Souza Vamanjoor, Melvyn Avinash Pais Allipade, Malcon Rego Derebail, Maria Joyce Vamanjoor, Sunil Antony Siddi, Sandeep Mascarenhas, Hanly Coelho, Anil D’Souza, Anant Kasargod and Rohan Lobo were part of the street play troupe.

 

Sandeep Monteiro Kayyar, Sheldon Crasta, Varnon D’Souza, Alvyn Fernandes and Prem were the backstage crew members.
