Mangalore, 13 Mar 2013: The first S. C. Frank Centenary Annual Endowment Lecture was inaugurated by Fr Joseph Rodrigues, SJ, Rector, St Aloysius College Institutions by unveiling the photo of Mr. Frank at the college campus on March 13, 2003. He welcomed the institution of the first such lecture in the college and wished success for the initiative. The annual endowment lecture is organised by the English department of the college.
Mr S. C. Frank was associated with St. Aloysius institutions for 44 years, first as teacher in the High School and later as Director of Physical Education and tutor in English. The annual lecture series has been instituted by his family to mark his birth centenary which falls on July 27, 2013.
Delivering the lecture on myth, culture and literature, Dr. Joseph Dorairaj, Dean, Faculty of English and Foreign Languages, Gandhgram Rural University, Tamil Nadu, said that myths and related rituals are not irrelevant to the modern age marked by science and technology. He said the modern man cannot escape from myths and such myths should be invested with new significance by translating and transforming them through modern interpretation.
Fr Swebert D’Silva, SJ, Principal of the college, in his message welcomed the first lecture series and hoped that other Departments would follow suit. Three of Mr. Frank’s students – Chevelier Clarence Pais, lawyer and planter, Fr Xavier Gomes, Principal, Milagres College, and Mr Michael D’Souza, President, St. Aloysius College Alumni/ae Association – fondly recalled their teacher with touching anecdotes. Prof Edmund Frank, eldest son of Mr SC Frank welcomed the audience and Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Professor, English Department, proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Mellissa Goveas progressed the function.
