Udupi: Bridge remains a mirage for Jarukudru residents

Udupi, 08 Jan 2013 (DHNS): The miserable plight of the residents of Jarukudru in Udyavar in Udupi taluk has continued to exist even after several years of fight. Jarukudru which is surrounded by water throughout the year has no road or bridge connectivity to the main road. Residents of the Kudru have no other option but to depend on boats to cross the river.

 

 

The villagers are deprived of basic facilities that people in other parts of the district are receiving. All the requests and demands put forth by Kudru residents before the bureaucrats and the elected representatives, demanding a connectivity went in vain.

 

Several families used to reside in Kudru which spreads over an area of 50 acre. But over the years, families have migrated from Kudru as this peninsula lacked facilities. A few families which are residing too are now planning to move out of the island.

 

The resident of the kudru have to struggle to get the commodities for daily use. Life has been a nightmare for those who fall ill during night. 

 

Several persons have lost their lives while crossing the river during monsoon. The elected representatives visit us when a mishap takes place in Kudru and make promises, which never gets fulfilled, said the residents.

 

Adding to the problem are the garbages that join the river, making it almost impossible for the people to step into the water. The stench emanating from water has made the lives of these people terrific.

 

Kudru residents have urged the authorities to construct at least a hanging bridge.

 

“We had approached Chief Minister, Union minister, MP and MLAs several times in the past. The meeting did not yield any fruitful results,” said the residents.
