Manipal, 30 Sep 2012: A huge gathering of General Public, healthy patients, faculty, students officials of Manipal University and others including children evinced a great deal of enthusiasm as they took part in the World Heart Day Walkathon 2012 Manipal here on Sunday. About a thousand keen participants assembled at the University building for the walk which had the theme “Team Up for Healthy Heart”.
Dr H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University flagged off the Walkathon. Mr Kota Srinivas Poojari Minister of Muzarai, Port and Inland Water Transport made a special visit and encouraged the pacipants of the World Heart Day Walkathon 2012 Manipal. The participants walked about 6 kilometers.
Mr Katapady Shankar Poojari President Udupi Zilla Panchayath and Mr S. A. Prabhakar Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, Udupi Zilla Panchayath distributed the prizes to the winners in various categories. Dr G K Prabhu Registrar Manipal University, Dr Sripathi Rao Dean KMC Manipal, Dr M Dayananda Medical Superintendent Kasturba Hospital, Dr Padmaraj Hegde Deputy Medical Superintendent Kasturba Hospital were also present.
Manipal Hrudaya Spandana - Heart Club launched
Mr Katapady Shankar Poojari President Udupi Zilla Panchayath unveiled the plaque and Mr Pramod Madhwaraj Congress leader handed over the first membership card of Manipal Hrudaya Spandana. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Madhwaraj said that the People generally know about health and preventive measures but fight shy of putting it into practice.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Padmakumar, Head Dept of Cardiology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal said the Manipal Hrudaya Spandana – Heart Club was formed with the objective of creating awareness among public about heart ailments. The membership offers free echo screening and one free Manipal Arogya Card. Enrolment to the Manipal Hruudaya Spandana will be open till October 31, 2012.
