Kolkata, 28 May 2010: An express train ‘Gyaneshwari Express’ coming to Mumbai and another good train were derailed in West Bengal by a blast engineered by the Maoists at around 1.30 am on Friday 28 May 2010. The passenger train was packed with sleeping passengers and slammed into a goods train, killing at least 65 people and injuring more than 200. More fatalities were feared in the mangled wreckage after 13 carriages of the Mumbai-bound express train went off the tracks and collided with the oncoming goods train.
The blast and derailment took place near the Sardiha station in West Bengal. Initial reports indicated the derailment may have been triggered by an act of sabotage, with officials pointing the finger at Maoist rebels who are active in the region of eastern India. Rescue operations are in full swing.
