Kallianpur: Last Mass celebrated in the old building of Mount Rosary Church

Kallianpur, 30 January 2012: “With your mercy we endure O Lord. You have bestowed all your blessings and filled us with your spirit even though from that thatched roof in 1837, the tiled clay roof on Nejar mountain in 1886, this church stands tall and reflects the hardship of our ancestors zeal in erecting every mortar we see in this church now is the hard labour of those people back in 18th century”. Thus acclaimed Vice president -Mr Jerry Vincent Dias, showing the heavy beams installed 30 to 50 feet high to support the church roof structure and said  that this was the manpower when there were no cranes or JCBs available as it is done now.

 

“It is the miracle of Mother of Rosary and our gift of profuse abundance to gain divine treasure”. He elaborated in his brief speech about the history of Mount Rosary. Further he said, “Today we are sad to demolish this church but the sorrow is changed into happiness to have the new church and a dream we all wanted to come true”.

 

 

It was nostalgic Sunday as the last mass was celebrated in the old structure of the Mount Rosary Church at Kallianpur on Sunday the 29 January 2012 by the Episcopal Vicar of Udupi, Rev. Dr. Baptist Menezes along with Parish Priest- Fr. Philip Neri Aranha , Dean of Kallianpur  Varado- Fr. Stany Lobo of Milagres Church  and other priests from neighbouring parishes. The old structure will be demolished to make way for the new and spacious church building.

 

Followed by Mass a small referral was organised in the church. During this occasion, Episcopal Vicar asserted that the new church is the need of all Rosarians due to the deteriorated condition of the 130 year old structure. His chosen words filled the congregation with new hope when he assured that the Bishops House of the proposed new Diocese of Udupi would be in the Blessed Mount Rosary.

 

According to the plans and the elevation the new church would accommodate around 1200 faithful with all modern prerequisites like state of the art natural light, ventilation of wind from all directions, insulation from sun for better interior cooling, sound systems and the choir consort room. The estimated cost of this project would be around  3 to 4 crores.

 

As the old church structure is being demolished, a glorious chapter in the history of 175 years of the church will come to a close and a new chapter will open with the construction of the new church building.

 

During the Padraodo-Propaganda controversy, the Mount Rosary church came into existence in 1837 under the legal orders of the pope and built a new thatched roof church. It was later moved to the Nejar Hill nearby and was rebuilt in 1882. An era of distinctive characters in devotion to God and the intercession of Mother Mary for the parish community in reward of abundant blessings from heaven have showered on Mount Rosarians.
