Udupi, 24 December 2011: On the occasion of the Yellamavasya, a large number of devotees took bath at the Malpe beach on Saturday, December 24, 2011. The district administration had taken all precautions for the safety of the women during this occasion.
There is a belief among the people that by taking bath in the sea on Yellamavasya, their sins would be washed away and they will be spared from adversities. As a result Shani god is also propitiated at the beach with different offerings. It is a rare coincidence that this year the Yellamavasya fell on Saturday itself.
The sea batch had started early in the morning at 2 am and continued till 12 noon. According to tradition, people after taking bath at the Malpe beach proceed too Vadabhandeshawara temple to offer prayers to god Balaram.
In order to prevent any untoward incident, this year Coast Guard along with the police boats kept a watch on the situation. Similarly there was tight security by the police in order to prevent theft of clothes and jewellery. The district administration had made sufficient arrangements for the women to change their clothes.
Like in the beach of Malpe, people also took sea bath at Gangolli, Kundapura, Hejmadi, Padubidri and other coastal places.
