Udupi, 30 October 2011: UPCL has taken out the routine annual maintenance shut down, with the concurrence of the Government Agencies like: KPTCL, MESCOM, etc., from 8th October, 2011 for one month. During this process of maintenance, the company has engaged Authorized agencies to clean sea water intake systems, inside the Sea, as this system has to be cleaned annually to clear the silt deposited at the bottom to have a free flow of water. The agencies are carrying out the said job to remove the silt in the system by pumps. There is no question of effluents inside Sea other than natural silt inside Sea.
However, surprisingly, some section of Press carried a news item stating that UPCL is pumping the effluent to the sea due to which the fishes die. It is hereby clarified that UPCL is only drawing the Sea water for cooling purposes and after cooling the system through NDCT, the water has been let into the sea, and as such there is no discharge of effluent to the sea. Also as on date, the plant is under shut down and hence the question of discharge of water from the plant to the sea does not arise.
In view of this practical position, it is only a rumour spread by the vested interest people, which is totally baseless and to confuse and mislead the general public.
