Mumbai, 10 March 2010: Nakre Shyam N Shetty was recently elected unopposed as the Vice President of Bombay Bunts Association, one of the most reputed community organisation since three decades. In the recently held general body meeting this announcement was made by the new President of the Association, Mr. Jayant K Shetty.
Nakre Shyam N Shetty, popularly known as Shyamanna has been a well-known personality. Originally, he is from Balipagutthu house of Nakre near Karkala. His contribution as the executive president of the Sports Committee of the Association has been significant. He has been instrumental in successfully conducting a number of sports activities.
Shyamanna came to the lime light by providing traditional Tulu food during the Tulu-Kannadiga marriages and other programmes. He was the first one to start ‘Shetty Caterers’ and providing its service in Mumbai and its suburbs, thus earning the name as the ‘father’ of the original Udupi caterers in Mumbai. He is the proprietor of ‘Shwetha Palace Hotel’ in New Mumbai and has served as the Honorary Chief Secretary of the Hotel Owners’ Association of New Mumbai for nearly one decade and later was its President. He was also the Treasurer of the Federation of Maharashtra Hotel and Restaurants Association and presently it’s Chief Treasurer. Shyamanna has been an active member of the Lions Club of Vashi.
Shyamanna is the son of Narayana Shetty, a prominent hotelier in Palghar and was born there. He was sent by his father to his native village, Nakre where the young Shyam acquired his primary education at the Sri Mahalingeshwara Primary School, Nakre. Besides extending his helping hand in the agricultural operations of the family, Shyam developed an interest in various religious and cultural activities dramas, Yakshagana, Nema-kola, kambala and jatres. Later, coming to Mumbai, after completing his education with great difficulty, Shyamanna started his own catering organization. He also extended his entrepreneurship by procuring tempo-trucks and starting the transport business as well.
Besides successfully handling the catering, hotel and transport business, Shyamanna also ventured into the world of Kannada film industry in the 1990’s. He started the ‘Film Combines’ in the name of his son, Rohan and produced the Kannada Film named “Ivalantha Hendathi’. Later, he also produced another film ‘Police File’ and earned the reputation as the first Bunt to produce Kannada films.
With the reputation as the one who would not budge to experiment, even in modern times, Shyamanna has been a successful hotelier and social worker. He has contributed generously to many of the religious and educational institutions in Mumbai as well as in his native place. He has been organizing Mahapujes in his village temple in Nakre, Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple. Soft-spoken and friendly, Mr. Shyam N Shetty has made the Tuluvas in Mumbai proud by his great achievements.
