NSS Units of Milagres College, enthusiastically involved in traditional ‘Paddy Cultivation’ at Balam

Udupi, 12 Dec 2023: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) took the initiative to organize a significant paddy cultivation project in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Eco Club at our college. This report highlights the purpose, execution, and outcomes of this collaborative endeavour.

 

On Sunday, December 10, 2023, about 70 students, basically NSS Volunteers and Eco club members, from Milagres College, Kallianpur were seen in the paddy fields. There was no limit to their joy to be with native farmers. After preparing the land, by tilling/ploughing, watering, and adding manure, the farmers work on the fields, normally known as transplanting paddy seedlings. A special breakfast and lunch were arranged at the landlord’s house.

 

The primary objective of this initiative was to integrate practical agricultural activities into the college curriculum to provide students with hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices. The project aimed to promote environmental awareness, community engagement, and the application of theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios.

 

Rurally located Milagres College is always at the forefront of organizing various Social awareness programs, directly involved in social work, and educating the people in the surrounding area.

 

 

The collaborative efforts of IQAC, NSS, and the Eco Club yielded significant outcomes:

• Enhanced practical knowledge and understanding of sustainable agricultural practices among participating students.

• Increased awareness about the importance of paddy cultivation and its role in sustainable food production.

• Strengthened community ties by involving locals in understanding and appreciating eco-friendly farming methods.

• Development of leadership and teamwork skills among participants through active involvement in the project.

 

It is fascinating to note that youngsters are showing interest and involvement in forgotten farming in our villages, once the dominant source of food and occupation.

 

Throughout the project, Mrs. Rekha U, Convener of Eco Club briefed information to the students regarding various challenges such as resource constraints, weather fluctuations, and logistical issues encountered during the cultivation.

 

The IQAC-driven initiative in collaboration with NSS and the Eco Club has been instrumental in fostering practical learning experiences related to sustainable agriculture and environmental consciousness among the college community.

 

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, faculty members, the landlord of the agricultural land Mr. Thamayya Poojary, Mr. Prashanth experts, and the local community for their unwavering support and commitment throughout the paddy cultivation project.

 

The Volunteers were divided into three groups and the NSS Leaders, Mr. Pramod, II BCA, Mr. Akash, II BCom, Mr. Shashank II BA, Ms. Neha II BCA, Ms. Varshini, II BCom were led these groups and involved diligently in the field.

 

NSS Officers - Mrs. Anupama Jogi, Mr. Ganesh Nayak and Eco Club Convener Mrs. Rekha U, Mr. Anil Danthy himself an expert modern farmer and Mr. Ravinandan Bhat, PRO were present to guide during the programme.
