Shirva, 20 Aug 2011: The New Block of St. Mary’s College, Shirva, with ground plus three floors, built at the cost of around one crore rupees will be inaugurated and blessed on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 9.30 am. The inauguration function will be presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza-Bishop of Mangalore and President of the Catholic Board of Education (CBE) Mangalore. The inaugurator and Chief Guest of the function will be Lalaji R. Mendon-MLA, Kaup Constituency. Rev. Fr. Wilson L.V. D’Souza-Secretary, CBE, Mangalore and Rev. Fr. Richard Coelho-Administrator, FMMCH, Mangalore will attend the function as guests of honour.

At the outset, welcoming the journalists, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro tracing the origin of St. Mary’s College said that it was in 1980, with a view to provide quality higher education to the poorer students from surrounding villages that late Rev. Fr. A. Rosario laid the foundation of St. Mary’s College in Shirva which has contributed to the progress in the field of education under the supervision of the CBE, Mangalore and the administration of Our Lady of Health Parish, Shirva. The institution celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2005 and is making progress towards the Golden Jubilee.
Speaking further, Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro said that when the college started in 1980, it had only arts and commerce sections. However, with the needs of the time, gradually BBM and BCA courses were added and at present the institution provides Post-Graduate courses in M.Com and M.S.W. Besides these courses, the college has been providing all necessary facilities for the staff and the students to pursue quality higher education in a conducive atmosphere. Besides extensive and spacious college building, the institution is providing good Library, Seminar Room with audio-visual facilities and Class-rooms with LCD provision.
Besides classroom lectures, the students are provided with opportunities to enhance their personality through NSS, NCC, Literature and Commerce Associations, IT Club, Career Guidance, etc. Training in Computers and access to the internet are other modern avenues that are open to the students. Students from poorer families are given scholarship and provided free lunch. Lecturers with research experience render their service with sincerity to the institution enabling the students to reach higher level of proficiency.
Besides Rev. Fr. Stany Tauro, the Press Meet was attended by Dr. J.C. Miranda-Principal of St. Mary’s College, Dr. Padmanabha Bhat-Head of the Department of Political Science, Prof. Subramanya Bhat-Head of the Department of English and Prof. Pascal D’Sa-Head of the Department of Commerce and Vice Principal of the College.
