Kallianpur, 13 June 2023: Milagres College, Kallianpur always known for innovative ideas, as its Principal Dr Vincent Alva rightly observed, ‘here we not only providing ambience to learn but also teach you to earn….’. The College organised a full-day Seminar – ‘Investor Awareness Programme’ for all its students in the Milagres Tri-centenary Auditorium on Tuesday, 13th June, 2023.
After invoking Almighty Lords’ Blessings by way of a prayer hymn, Ms Elvisha DSilva of III B Com A, extended a warm and cordial welcome to all guests and participants.
Formal Inauguration ceremony was held at 9.30 a.m. Correspondent of Milagrean Institutions and the Rector of the Cathedral V. Rev. Fr Valerian Mendonca inaugurated the Seminar and blessed and wished the unique full day programme be useful and bear fruit in the life of all participants in their respective career. While congratulating the organisers viz the SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India), MUCTA (Mangalore University, Commerce Teacher’s Association) along with Department of Commerce & IQAC, he appreciated them for arranging learned trainers and resource persons.
In her keynote address, Mrs Shylet Mathias, Head, Dept of Commerce, outlined the need and relevance of such workshops at the backdrop of Mangalore University making Financial Awareness a compulsory subject to the students of all streams under NEP. She took the opportunity to express special thanks to resource team and sponsors for choosing Milagres College in particular.
Principal Dr Vincent Alva shared his personal experiences in investments and gave examples how students can start with small first steps and College always happy and ready to provide incubation and guidance to aspirants in days to come.
To wind up the formal inauguration, Mr Flavan Picardo, III B Com B proposed vote of thanks to all who cooperated and coordinated this Seminar.
At 10.20 the first Technical Session was on roll. Mr Naveen Rego, SEBI Registered CFP, was at his best to explain the Financial Literacy, to the participants with his crispy examples and PPT presentations.
The next Session was ‘Back to Basics’. Mr Leo Amal A., Senior Branch Manager, Franklin Templeton India, Pvt Ltd highlighted the need and significance of Savings, investment. Giving insight into various avenues of investments, he specially focussed on the benefits of the Mutual Funds. As the students its right time and best avenue to make a beginning with as small as Rs. 500/- p.m. in SIP (Systematic Investment Plans), choosing from 44 diverse funds - consistently from the pocket money and later increase the amount while earning, he advised.
After the lunch which was served in the hall for all the participants, the last and the final III Session was started at 1.45 p.m. which lasted for 2 hours – Personal Finance, key ideas on building wealth – short, medium and long term investments and differences between Debt & Equity with the active participation of students. He also shared few leaflets to give a brief of India’s Stock Market – Sensex and Nifty along with explaining Mutual Funds, Emergency and Retirement Fund building.
Student leaders coordinated the whole event meticulously, handling emcee and presentation, introduced trainers and resource persons to the audience and after individual Session they were recognised and appreciated with jasmine flowers and memento by the Principal Dr Vincent Alva, Vice Principal Prof Sophia Dias and Mrs Shylet Mathias Head – Dept of Commerce.
IQAC Coordinator Dr Jayaram Shettigar, Enthusiastic members of both the teaching and non teaching staffs too were present as the topics were very interesting and relevant.
All the students of the College, from different streams – i.e. BA, BSc, BCom, BCA counted more than 650 were recognised with Certificates as it was one of the largest gathering in a Seminar in recent years, arranged in the College. The beautiful event was given a respectful ending with the National Anthem at 4.10 pm.
